Duncan Thurlby Metal Sculpture
Following graduation from Loughborough College of Art and Design in 1990 I set up a workshop in Nottingham where I started work as a self employed metal sculptor working freelance for several interior design companies. Here, I was designing and making sculptures for venues such as: Camden Palace night club; Chelsea Football Club; the Newcastle Centre for Life; Brannigans; Chicago Rock Clubs and many, many more! In more recent years I have concentrated increasingly on commissions for private clients and gallery pieces, as well as exhibiting work at large indoor and outdoor venues including the Manchester Art Show, Wirksworth Festival, the recently established Melbourne Festival and most recently at the Ferrers Gallery. In 2008/9 I made a large architectural water feature/sculpture for a local health authority. In April 2010 I won the WOW factor award at the British Craft Trade Fair and am presently completing an interview for the Craft and Design magazine and am due to feature in March/April 2011.
The 1990’s saw me making scrap metal dinosaurs; animated grandfather clocks and musical instruments; outsize eagles; lizards; tigers; Harley Davidsons; rock stars; even a three metre high Victorian skateboarding waiter! and tons more! Mostly conceived and built with a healthy dose of humour! Each piece of work has a character all of its own and although this is initiated by me ‘they’ do tend to take over and evolve on their own through the making process, the materials and any number of abstract ingredients thrown into the mix, rarely resembling exactly the original thoughts and concepts. There are no blueprints, as I rarely make more than a cursory sketch, allowing each creature to become the result of an ‘unnatural evolution!’
